The wagon roofline is taller at the location where the rear of the coupe door falls than the coupe/camino roofline. The coupe/camino also has a more laid-back windshield and overall lower height than the wagon or sedan.

This is probably my favorite 2 door wagon (aside from the one in my shop building under construction). You can see how the roofline starts tall and drops all the way back...to my eye it just flows better than the blue one.

Brian,
That is a nicely done 2-dr conversion. Most ones that I've seen over the years look like an afterthought..
I also never really cared for the emulated Nomad B-pillar.

Hope you do better on the roofline than this one, it just looks "humpy" to me...an awkward transition from the top rear corner of the door glass to the wagon window line.

It looks like he made his own B-pillar minus the little 1/4 panel window, losing the curve of the B-pillar. I have no idea yet what I'll run into . I sure ain't criticising his work, it's just not my plan.

My opinion on your plans is keep the orignal tailgate & mod it for station wagon use, the curved corners of the ElCaminos quarters look better than the square wagon ones. Also mod them to accept '88-'98 C/K tail lights (I saw this mod in Hot Rod in the '90's.) Depending on your metal skills you could keep the round corners on the rear of the roof as it goes down that last pillar. Any way you do it, Nomad project will be cool, 2 door wagons are cool rides.

Using an El Camino will mean you will have to splice the roof due to the longer wheelbase.

Where are you located, I have a friend that has a bunch of Camino and wagon parts (usually pretty cheap), but isn't crazy about shipping large stuff.
