Hi, I have a th350 on my 78 cutlass. After a loud bang, it no longer drives forward in any gear, but reverse still works. After doing some research, I believe the problem is the forward clutch. Now my question is, Do I have to remove the pan, valve body etc to get to the forward clutch. Or can i just leave all that intact and start removing the pump assembly etc. I dont want to do a complete rebuild , I just want to fix the problem.

If you have to replace something broken inside you are better off rebuilding the whole thing while you're in there. If something broke most likely the broken pieces made it through the trans.

I know it doesn't answer your question. My brother had a similar problem with a 4l60e and it turned out to be the planetary gears and needed a compete overhaul.

It sucks to cross the river de nial but just like a broken tooth the whole thing has to come out with no shortcuts. What if there is metal shards caught in there and after all the work you described, you get to 3rd gear and it happen all over again?
