hello all i am going to go on a rant here since this forum has gotten a little wordy not pointing fingers but let me tell you my story on how i see the automotive scene. i grew around the automotive scene my grandfather was a mechanic my dad was a mechanic heck even my mother was one for a bit. now growing up i was always around olds muscle cars i was born in 1998 so yes a 1987 monte carlo was old to me now fast forward a couple years and here i am with a 1986 and 1987 cutlass and monte carlo. but that doesnt stop me from liking just old muscle cars the past few years i have been around the euro scene and even the jdm scene lets just call it the import scene and to me i have found that the automotive scene is not just about one make or one model its the whole thing the euros the jdms much more. because at the end of the day that guy driving that golf helped me put my engine in my cutlass and he did it not because i payed him or anything because thats what we like to do. now we are here to learn not bicker lets take pride into our cars and other cars lets ask questions not say i am right because chances you dont know everything so why not reach out to someone that does that is what i see of the automotive scene i see FAMILY sorry about the long post hope you enjoy my little late night rant

People will have their favorites. I prefer American cars. I was in the jdm scene with a wrx sti it was fast and a great car the people were cool but when I would tell some about my malibu they would say "isn't that a low rider"?

People are ignorant to other car genres because they want to be. I like everything I appreciate everything but my love of cars belong to the American V8 cars.

There are alot of people like you have already mentioned like that but unless you have a friend that has an import or euro you'e most likely aren't gonna get Tandon any help from them because of automobile preference.

Owning a car doesn't mean just making payments. I see some incredible craftsmanship on the Forum. To me, you don't truly 'own' your car until you either repaired/rebuilt or customized it. And I don't mean buying stick-on fender louvers. If you want to make a change, and you have to go learn about how effect that change, you start your 'owning' your car. That's one reason I share so much on the Forum, sometimes the same advice over and over. The statement is always implied, 'use my advice or not, no problem.' And payback is when the new folks learn and contribute knowledge themselves. That's my Scene.

Jeremy, I know what you're saying. Sometimes, it seems to me that its easier for some people to bicker, than it is for them to try to see other points of view.
I've been around a bit longer than you have, but I have similiar memories of when I was younger. My father wasn't a mechanic, but he wasn't afraid to do as much as he could, in terms of doing his own repairs on both his cars, and other power equipment around our house, and if he didn't know how to do something, he would try to learn (things were simpler at that time). He was always big on doing regular maintenance on his vehicles and power equipment, and I think I got at least part of my knowledge and interest from him.
I have been a lifelong vehicle nut. I've always been interested in cars, trucks, and even motorcycles. Sometimes, I get depressed by people that I call car snobs. To me, these are people who are only interested in a certain type of vehicle, or vehicles from a certain time period. When I first owned my '84 Monte, and it wasn't as old as it is now, I would get turned away from some car shows and cruise nights, because my car wasn't "old enough". It made me feel like some kind of second-class car enthusiast, like I wasn't worthy, because of the age of my car. To me, that really shouldn't matter, because different people are interested in different types (and different years) of cars, and everyone should be able to share their interests. Now that my car is almost 32 years old, I don't have that issue much anymore, so I can participate in more events, and I get more enjoyment out of that participation. On the flip side of that, I think I'm lucky, because I'm interested in pretty much anything, in terms of vehicles. When I go to a car show, or cruise night, or swap meet, I'll look at just about anything & everything that's there, because I usually find all of it interesting. I find that looking at different cars, or different modifications to cars will give me ideas on things to try on my own cars.
I think I understand what you're saying. Its kind of like the old saying "Why can't we all just get along?".

I can relate to what your saying. When people I meet ask what kind of car I'm working on and I tell them,"Cutlass", the first thing they ask is the year then get dis-interested because its an 85 and not a numbers matching, 70 442 or something. I get asked by some if I'm putting hydraulics on it or told that "too bad its not a Grand National". I just don't get it sometimes.

i say the real enthusiast are the ones that will give you thumps up at the light when your sitting next to them in a completely different car and style because they understand the love for the car

With the autonomous cars fast approaching, car culture in general will decline. We need to stick together, all cars. Just because it isn't your scene, doesn't mean that there isn't value in it. And remember, #SaveTheElks!

I generally try to appreciate and respect all "scenes" and types of cars/trucks/bikes etc. I know we all come from different backgrounds, we like different stuff, we have our own tastes which is totally fine. Its what makes the world go round, and its what makes your vehicle yours. I tend to favor domestic V8 cars, but that doesn't mean I don't like and appreciate all kinds of cars. Something I don't like or agree with in the automotive scene are just uneducated people. Yes, I understand some of us were born into the automotive scene pretty much like the OP was talking about, and like myself. So we learn a lot quick. Other people get into it much later and life, and of course some are just starting out, and they may not know much at all, which is just fine, we all have to start somewhere. To my point, I hate when people "need" to get a car truck or do mods to it to fit in with a crowd or be cool or what have you. For example here in the south east we have a lot of trucks running around with the "squat, lean" etc. Basically these people are putting 2-8" lift kits on the front of their trucks and not touching the back. They are driving around with the headlights aimed towards the sky, control arms on the snubbers so is no suspension in the front end, steering geometry screwed so they all have the death wobble. But when you talk to a driver of said vehicle they swear to you nothing is wrong with it. A lot of people who haven't even stepped foot near a toolbox want this done to their trucks because its "cool." They don't realize what they are doing is so unsafe and you can't tell them otherwise. And its the same stuff with all vehicles and scenes everywhere. And it just stinks because if you are going for a certain look more often than not you can find a correct, safe way to achieve that, but some people act like you can't tell them anything or you don't know because you aren't in that "scene." At the end of the day we share a common interest, and that is cars. Sure we may all have our different cars and styles and stuff we like and that is ok. But when I have a conversation with a person and they can't have an open minded conversation about cars with me, that's when I have a problem. And unfortunately that's a lot of time. I've never had any problems like that on GBF which is why I love to post here and just talk to people. Its like filling a void I don't get in my daily life. Maybe I went off on a little bit of a rant as well, but I hope what I typed furiously made some sort of sense to you guys.
