What are these two plugs on the housing and do i need them? I was thinking of doing a chrome housing.

If you are running the computer then, yes. You need them. One is the coolant temp sensor and the other is probably a thermal vacuum switch.

if both are electrical it's the coolant sensor(this is probably on the side of the block but not always) and sender for the gauge.

one is electrical and one has two vacum lines with a screw blocking one of the vacum lines. My temp sensor for the gauge is on the side of the block.

by looking at those valve covers , is your engine a vortec ?

if so , you have to keep the coolant sensor because it sends signal to the pcm

It's not for the gauge, it's for the computer.
