Was at Express Pull and Save in La Vergne back in April looking for some parts for my regal and peeked off into a square body Suburban. Someone had pulled the intake and valve covers off an engine and the heads looked brand new inside. Apparently this is a GM crate engine made in Mexico with 4 bolt mains.

I pulled the heads off and figured I'd get them magnafluxed, heck for 30 bucks a piece I couldn't go wrong. When I looked into the cylinder bores they looked perfect. I got excited then realized I was there by myself so I just bought the heads and tried to convince myself that I didn't need the block. After a couple of weeks I couldn't resist, so I went back with a buddy pulled the short block, 49.99!

Brought it home and took off the oil pan and it's a 4 bolt main. Pulled off one of the main caps and the bearings looked nice and shiny. I just came inside from my shed, I've got the timing set and all the rods pulled and all the rod bearings look perfect. The cylinders have some surface rust since it sat out at the junkyard with no heads but, I plan to drop it off at the machine shop next week to get hot tanked and re-honed.

I'm trying to decide if I should just throw a 200.00 rebuild kit at it and sell it or throw some good heads on it and make it a monster....suggestions?

All the bearings look like this, I figured I'd replace them since they've been exposed to who knows what.

Here's a pic of the block as I'm tearing it apart tonight, I'm finished pulling all the rods and pistons, thinking about going back and finishing removing the crank.

If you can get away with a simple hone to true everything up and avoid bigger machine work you found yourself a good deal. You can flip that when its done and make your money back and then some when your done. Wish I could stumble across a deal like this sometime.

Update! Machine shop just called, heads came back crack free...He's ordering a new set of seals and we're pricing out some Z28 springs so I can cam the motor up!

Whenever you put that engine back together. Be sure to plug off whichever dip stick hole your not using. I know the oil pan usually covers up the side not being used but I always put silicone in the hole just as a precaution.

Looks like a good find and for a good price. Congrats.

Thanks for the tip, I was looking at that last night and wondering if the new oil pan gasket would be enough. I just ordered some Z28 springs from alexsparts.com, they say they're good for 500 lift and the machinist says they'll work. Think I'm going to get a Lunati 60102LK (219/227@50 468/489) cam to put in it. Anyone know what kind of power numbers with 72cc heads and flat top pistons?

Great find you got lucky with that block especially since it was still there when you returned. i had the same thing happen to me once when i found a 8.5 grand national rearend in a a car, i didnt have the money when i first saw and i returned a week later expecting it to be gone, but it was still there and 75 bucks later i had a 8.5 posi rear.

That's awesome about finding that rear end. I wish something like a GN would show up at a yard around here!

richp85elco, Here's a link to the springs I bought http://www.alexsparts.com/products/SBC- ... -LIFT.html

They're 21.95 for a set, say they allow up to a .500 lift. If they work as good as I hear, I'll hopefully be a tire burning fool.
