As I may have referred to, I lost a good friend/mentor back in December. Spoke with his daughter today. She had a couple questions about some of his stuff, and wanted to resolve them before the auction they scheduled. She had hoped the nephews/grandkids would get their acts together and continue his small bodyshop/general repair business, but it's not to be (bunch of freeloaders for the 2 decades I've known them). Shame really, he deserved a better family than he got.

I had a few small things at his place that I didn't make a fuss about, because losing the patriarch is worse than anything i might have lost with his passing.

Can't decide whether to go to the auction or not. He had a lot of stuff, tools, equipment, performance parts, engines, etc. On the one hand, could be a good opportunity to buy at a decent price, and on the other hand, probably really don't need most of it. Mostly, I don't want to accumulate so much stuff that my family goes through this scenario.

Of course, the last bodyshop auction I went to was nuts. people paying retail+ for used welders and equipment. Crapshoot, I guess.

Had an acquaintance that passed. Went to the auction looking for a deal. Left with one single item I bought right at the end. A set of Mac files. It was a good deal, but more so for the memory. He has a son, if he ever gets into vehicles, I'll just give them to him.

If you have the time I'd go.

Last auction I went to down here things went way too cheap. There were machine presses selling for minimum bid to guy you knew were just gonna scrap it. I didn't have to store or ways to haul it though.

I can remember thay when stuff was petering out the guy said, look, there's no way I can sell it that cheap. How about $xyz to the only guy with a bid in.

I "might" have wound up with a case of r12 cans for $10, including all the other junk that was also on the shelf since they went through and sold it shelf by shelf.

M22 trans was $20. Whole engines were going for $50 as-is....

Around here automotive related auctions bring all the people out, and they all have to flex their wallets. 15 year old used lifts routinely sell for retail of the same model brand new. SMDH The only way to get a good deal around here is to wait until the very end of the auction when they are selling the "smalls" and most of the guys have already blown their cash showing off.

My best friend is an auctioneer. Number one in Iowa actually. I used to help him from time to time. I don't go to his auctions anymore because they are on line and live at once. Everything brings too much money that way. Good for him and the seller, but I am a cheapskate. I would go if I was you, just for the principal.
