i was looking for something to do with a little spare money laying around and i thought of tinting the windows. i have no experience with tint at all and i have some questions.

first of all, how dark can i go, and which windows can i do to still be legal in P.A.? is there anywhere i can look this up?

can i install it myself and have it not be bubbley like some i've seen?

what is the darkness % scale, low #s are dark, or low #s are light tint?

what is a good brand for a descent price?

just looking for some pointers and suggestions, any replies are appreciated. 🙂

tint

here is a link i found for your question.
70% tint is considered what the factory already has put on the window of the car equiped with a/c. It dosen't look tinted but it is. The police are very kind to let me know that everytime they right me a ticket for 24% windows
Hope that link helps

The lower the percentage the darker the tint and also refers to the amount of light it lets in. So 30% is darker than 70%, 30% lets only 30% of light through, while 70% allows 70% of the light to pass.

As for state laws, I'm sure you can look online on the state DMV or DOT website, call your local police/sherif dept., or call a "legit" window tinting shop. All of them should have the correct answer.

Most states allow you to tint all the windows. Usually the darkest you can go is 30 or 35%. Windshield tinting is mostly illegal except down to the ASI line (if you car has one) ... if not the state usually has a recomendation as to how far you can tint.

Many people have tinted their own stuff (I never have), but IMO I'd just go to a professional (with a guarentee) to do it to make sure it's bubble free. If you did decide to do your own I would suggest practicing on some old glass or windows first to make sure you know what you're doing.

thanks guys!!

johnnyslick- if you don't mind me asking, about how much would be the average price for tint on a car, (everything but front windshield)

do any of you guys have a pic of a car with 70% tint all around, because that is all that PA allows, and by the way it sounds, that is light.

and on that link, it specified net or film, it there a big differnce between the two?

thanks again!

I used to tint windows back in the day. For a Cutlass you could expect to pay anywhere from $75 to $200 or more. Just depends on the shop.

You can buy pre-cut tint on E-Bay fairly cheap. I think it was like $30 for my Cutlass when I priced it out, and I will probably go that route after I paint it. It is not too hard to do, just be sure to do it in a garage and have a spray bottle with some soapy water in it. Clean the windows to a perfect streak free state with glass cleaner, and tack them off with a tack cloth right before you work on them to be sure no dirt or dust will be trapped with the tint. Next up, spray the window you are working on with soapy water. Do the same to the tint as you peel off the backer so that it does not stick to itself ( Hint: You will want a helper). Use dish soap and not any kind of degreaser like Castrol Super clean. You can use a Bondo Spreader to smooth it out and remove the water when you are done. Work from the center out to remove the water. Just be sure the A/C works, because you can't roll the windows down for a few days while the glue sets up and the water evaporates.

Just got mine tinted a few days ago... 70% all the way around. Thats is what the Tint guy in Florida told me was legal. I paid 150.00 and the guy came to my place and did it in the driveway. I have had windows tinted on at least 10 cars and this was the best job I had ever gotten, cheapest price, and to come to me and do it- now that is service. If anyone in the Tampa area wants a nice tint job pm me and I wil give you his number.

if u tint it...go with 30%..i live in pa,i have mine 5% though, only thing i still gotta tint is my doors, but when u do the tint, shape the tint from the outside and trim it up from outside( make sure the clear side of the tint is facing you for the window you're doing ),use a heat gun or blow drier to shrink it to the window before you cut it for the window, clean all windows with a razor blade and use baby shampoo or lots of windex, when your pulling the clear away from the black on the tint, spray alot on the window and alot on the tint to allow it to move around,i did mine it was easy, back window was a little p.i.t.a. windshield was easy,i went 8" on my windshield, although we're only allowed to go 6"
