I want to upgrade my trailing arms and was thinking of welding plates to the bottom of the stock trailing arms would this be beneficial or am I better off just getting some aftermarket ones?

What are you trying to achieve? How is your car setup currently? Future plans?

If the drivetrain is stock and you want some better handling, there are better options to get it.

A factory style sway bar will add a little roll stiffness, and boxing the LCAs probably doesn’t add much, if any, beyond that. A frame mounted (pro-touring style is what some companies call it) sway bar is a much bigger bang for your buck. There are bolt in after market ones, as well as some junk yard cheapo conversions if you aren’t afraid of a little fab work. That style sway bar combined with tall ball joints in the front (there’s another recent thread running around on that topic) will significantly improve your body roll and handling.
If you go that route, make sure you’ve got a matching - i.e. big enough - front bar. Too much rear roll stiffness makes for hella oversteer.
