i got a nice transmission cooler off a buddy of mine that is already setup with -8an lines. my question is am i able to bypass the cooler in the rad or how exactly should i hook it up. i was thinking of mounting the cooler in front of the rad as i no longer have the ac condenser
I believe you want to run the lines into the transmission cooler first, then to the radiator, then back to the transmission. I'm not sure about where to mount it although where you said sounds like a good place.
From what I've read and other peoples experiences, you should not bypass the radiator but you should have the fluid go into the transmission cooler first, then the radiator, then back to the transmission.
If you bypass the rad with your coolant the transmission will take a while to warm up as it wont be warmed up by the engine fluids. It's better not too bypass it if you're planning on driving it through the winter. It doesnt really matter if your using it for summer thought. It will run cooler in the summer too. Using one or the other is ok, using both is ok, but not using one at all is generally not ok.
Most people mount their transmission cooler in front of the rad for cold air flow and to keep it generally out of harms way. I dont really think location is too critical if your able to have cold air pass by it but in front of the rad is generally the most efficient place to put it.
For some reason most people on here disagree with me on this. But as it was said above. Plum the new cooler before your rad cooler. If you run just the aftermarket one, your fluid can cool down to much. You need that heat from the rad to get the transmission fluid to the proper operating temp.
