I just finished changing my trans filter in my 200r4 transmission, and I noticed that the one I took out has no filter element only a fine screen, and the new one from tci has a yellow element. Any pro's and con's to these two? trans if from bowtieoverdives and its the first filter change since I got it from them.

thanks,
wade

i changed one in an old th350 like that. the new filter my friend picked up had that yellow element material vs the old fine screen. i would think the element is a better filter material than the screen that is prob why most of the filters now use the elements. my guess would be that it was just an older style filter

Wade, I am planning to change my 200-4R filter this Fall when the temps cool down. I recently bought a new Federated brand filter and it also has the yellow mesh filter material. I'm guessing the one in my car is the original as I don't think it's ever been changed.

Any special tips for someone who has never changed the transmission fluid and filter. There was a new gasket in the box also that I'll use. Did you use the plain gasket or did you also add any RTV sealer in addition to the gasket.

I'm just going to drain the fluid and replace the filter, not flush the whole transmission. I've heard it's better to drain and refill than to flush all the old fluid out of it. Michael

I changed my transmission filter in my 2004r not to long ago. The kit i bought came with a rubber gasket so I didn't use any RTV. Holds up just fine.

Hey Mike, well I don't really know if it's better to drain and refill, the only reason I changed all of the fluid in mine is cause it was a trans swap so I figured since I had it out might as well get all the old fluid out, if it's in the car you can take it to a shop that has a fluid exchanger it cycles out the old with the new, or you can disconnect a trans line and run the car till it pumps the fluid out, plus I'm filling her up with ams oil trans fluid didn't want to mix it with the stuff that was already in there. I never use rtv too much, never had a problem with leaks, but some people find it easier to use it cause it helps keep the gasket in place when your putting the pan on. One piece of advice the filter pulls straight down, and it's on there pretty good don't worry pull hard, and make sure the old plastic grommet comes out with the old filter before you put the new one in if its not you gotta fish out.
