I recently got my malibu back , when it left it had a 6cyl in it with auto trans . for the life of me i cant remember if it was the 3.3 or the 3.8 . if it helps it now has a 355 small block mounted up to it . Not sure if both work on sb's . Either way which transmission is a direct swap so i can get rid of this small one . it seems to be holding this motor back badly . I dont want to have to have the driveshaft cut . any help is great ... thanks guys

A th350 will bolt right in, if it doesn't already have one. You will need to stick with the v6 transmission mount to make it work with the stock crossmember. If you want overdrive, use a 2004r. You will need a new crossmember and frame extension, and a way to lock up the convertor, but it will still work with the stock driveshaft.

how could i go about telling which transmission is in it without pulling it out and taking it to someone ? is it tagged somewhere so it can be identified ?

Count the pan bolts. And this should help ya. You are most likely looking at number 2 or 3.
