200-4R... i was driving down the highway in od, and when i got off the exit i think i heard a clack, and then i only have 1st gear... wtf... what could it be?

Sounds like your transmission is junk, first thing would be to pull the dipstick and see if the fluid is dark or smells burnt.

If it went from working fine to first gear only that quick, it may just be a governor problem. You'll have to pull the pan to diagnose it. It resides under a four-bolt cover at the rear of the trans where the rear of the pan comes to a point. 200-4R governors are known for tossing a spring off the weight which will cause no shifts.

Before you pull the pan though, make sure that your TV cable is intact. If it broke for some reason, there is a safety mechanism built into the stock valve body which will provide full pressure as a limp mode and it usually doesn't shift either.

THANK YOU... gonna check it out, the tv cable has a little more slack than usual, but does not feel like its broke, i can pull it and it can pull itself back, so it feels like its still connected inside the trans... hopefully i didnt do too much damage limping her home

MEANBUICKS... you sir are a freaking GENIUS.... dropped the pan, and whats sitting in the small section of the pan? the governor gear spring... thanks for all the help... i would of dropped the pan, saw a spring and said "fukit" and brought it for a rebuild... also, surprisingly little metal in the pan, magnet looked slightly fuzzy, but no noticeable pieces even after straining through a paint strainer... i had just gotten her shifting right too... old tv cable was frayed and zip tied on, so she wouldnt shift, and when she did the shifts were hard, replaced the tv when i replaced the engine and she shifted perfectly... and now this... DOES A 200 have a governor gear? at least i think its a 200, stock trans in my 83 bu 3.8 229... trying to fix my DD ASAP

spring was only slightly bent so i fixed it and re-used it, hopefully if i baby her she will make it till payday

Glad you got it fixed easily. It's a fairly common occurrence in the Turbo Buicks, especially after doing a burnout. Probably rattles the spring loose when the tires chatter and begin to catch the pavement. A good mod is to drill and tap a hole in the small weight and use a 1/4-20 nylon screw to help retain that spring kind of in the same manner that GM used on your large weight spring. (The Buick governors don't have a spring on the heavy weight.)

I just had yet another conversation with a car guy yesterday claiming the 2004r is "junk". I don't prefer the term junk, just temperamental.
