I drive an 86' Elco, the transmission lags bad between 1st and second...ive heard these cars are really notorious for this, correction, this transmission is notorious for this....Is there a way to fix it and get firmer shifting? i dont really want to change transmissions, but if i have to i guess i will.....hopefully someone knows what to do

Sounds like it could possibly be a broken accumulator spring in the valvebody. A shift kit would correct this and most shift kits will include your springs and check balls the whole nine yards. Is it a 2004R????? I do carry them at work here is a link if your interested.

First, how many miles on the transmission?

Does the transmission fluid have any metal color about it,or does it smell burnt ?

Might be that the clutch material is starting to wear down and not fully locking up.

If it does have metal color or a burnt smell to the fluid there's not much that's a " quick fix " at all.But you could change the filter and fluid add Lucuas Oil transmission additive.Or just add it without changing filter and fluid.
Or if you don't want to get that involved, and if the transmission is about a quart low on fluid, add a can Trans-X to the transmission.

But if it's not the fluids or filter or anything else mentioned don't seem to help,it's time for that overhaul 🙁
