Hey guys, short question here, i think my transmission for the 305 chevy was leaking a little. i see red ATF fluid near what i think is the speedo cable. my grandpa told me that the transmission leaked fluid before but i thought it was just brake fluid because when i check the trans fluid level and it was full. i was wondering if i need to buy a whole new speedo cable or something like that. also can i fill the transmission from the dipstick hole?

Make sure to check the transmission fluid after driving the car 5-10 miles to make sure it is hot. Park on a level surface and keep the car running. Check the fluid level in Park and make sure parking brake is on or you blocked some wheels for safety. You can add fluid thru the dipstick. Do it in small amounts at a time to avoid over filling it.

Leaking could be the speedo cable or maybe the lines going in for the cooler which is in the same area on my 85 MC 200 4R transmission.

Good luck.

Jeff

ill get some pictures but it didnt really look like much fluid, it was just coated in it, and there was no drips on the ground

Ditto Jeff - Clean the area good and drive it since your not even getting a drip. If it is leaking you can pull the pull the speedo housing and replace seals or just buy a new housing asm. You have bigger fish to fry right now I want to see you get this car out and enjoy it.
