I was looking around in a junkyard, and found an old station wagon with an ovedrive transmission. 200r4???? Not sure.

My first question is, do buick, pontiac, olds engines look the same? I have an Olds engine and need that style bellhousing. The engine looked exactly like mine, but it wasnt an Olds stationwagon, and definately wasnt a Chevy.

The second question is, should I get this? Will it fit in my Cutlass? Will I need a different driveshaft?

This isnt the same topic but, I also found an Olds 350 diesel. Would that be worth it grabbing that too? I know they are very strong blocks. Will people pay good money for the block?

if it's an overdrive it's almost certainly a 200r4. the easy way to tell is if the case is all one piece. the other trannise had the tailshaft bolted on.
depending on what trans you have now you may need a new driveshaft. you could just get one from the junkyard and replace the u-joints.
i'd grab the 350 diesel!!!!! they make the perfect base for a HP motor.
oh and most 200r4's have a dual pattern bellhousing, a few early ones only have the B.O.P bolt pattern.

I looked at the transmission pan, it was really weird the way it was shaped, it also said auto overdive somewhere on the dash. I didnt notice the tailshaft. Of course someone grabed the rear end and drive shaft, but it was one of those huge station wagons, so I doubt that one would have fit. My car came with the th-200.

if it was a double hump pan it's probably the r4.

Cool, I am pretty sure it was!

Also, if it is a TH200 4R, the tailshaft will not be a separate casting, it will be a part of the trans case. Plus, it will be the same length as a TH200 or TH350 and uses the same driveshaft yoke. The only bad thing about the trans out of a non performance model would be the governor that shifts at 3,000 RPM at WOT as opposed to 4500-5k on a performance one. Plus, there are a few improvements to the valve body on a performance car model. I think the TH 700 R4 uses a rectangular pan as opposed to the dual sump oddball the TH200 4R uses.

Isnt it possible to buy a governor that will shift where you want at wot?

I just looked on Summit, they have these kits that you change the springs and weights to adjust shift points, shift time. The only bad thing is that you keep trying different ones till you feel you have the best performance.
I think it was by TCI.
