I was told a transmission I got off a 80 some monte carlo ss was a 200r4 and want to make sure. It only shifts six times by hand but has a 4 hole plug in the side. What is it?

is the tailshaft bolted on or is it cast with the main housing? does the trans pan have 1 main sump or a main sump and a small bump on the rear side?

Yep it is a 200r4. What all do i need to get to make it run right and not burn up on me? Never had one before.

now i'm not saying to but a new trans, but the build they do on the stage 2 is pretty much what you're gonna want to do. unless you're going to a really strong (600hp+) strong motor, in which case go with the extra stage 3 mods.
the basic stuff is more high quality clutches, a shift kit, grand national servo, and high quality bands. those will keep away the common gremlins and hold some decent power.

The 200-4r is a drop in replacement for the th200c other then needing a new cross member isn't it? Of course with my current gearing, 4th gear would only be used then on interstate.

It bolts in provided you have the right crossmember, trans mount, and the extra set of holes on the driver's side of the frame. And yeah, the stock gears are awesome only if you do land speed record racing...lol

I am going to be getting that trans for my car. It is coming out of some big Chevy station wagon, will that crossmember from that car work? I cant tell you what kind it was but it was not a Gbody, it was bigger.

I was also wondering what the connector was on the side of the transmission, is that for a lockup converter?

Nope, the crossmember has to be from a G body.
