i have and 85 cutlass supreme with a 3.8 v6 and th200 metric transmission....sometimes when im at a stop light then take off its takes forever for it too shift into 2nd gear..i can hear the fan and motor going but the car really not going anywhere for the fan too be that loud..i think its a transmission problem..after it shift to 2nd gear its all good i had the car about a month and it has done this 4 times to me..if i take off kinda fast sometime 2nd gear will shift sooner? any advice

check the trans level when warm, and on a flat area. hope it's just low. If fluid brown, or smell burnt it's toast. In that case throw in a th350 and never look back

check your kick down cable and adjust it if necessary. push in the tab or button looking thing on top and then go press your gas pedal as far down to the floor as possible and you should hear a little click once you let off. was there any carb work done to it recently?

will a th350 work fine with my 3.8 v6.......? and I did adjust the cable and is was working good for a couple of days....and the fluid level is good but it does kinds smell burnt and looks brown/blackish instead of that red......an as far as garb work being done I don't think so be cuz the car was sitting for four years ive had it for a month now

sounds dumb but make sure the pedal rod or anything else for that matter isnt pressing against the floor mat. im not 100% but i think 350 trans's are for sbc 305 's and 350's so i doubt it would bolt up to a 6. my 84s a 6 and from what i remember, its got a smaller transmission then a 305. if you oil is burnt, change it and the filter before you try anything else. who knows when the last time it was changed if ever, and after sitting 4 years, the oil has probaly broken down to a useless sludge anyhow. id take it to a transmission shop and get them to do a good flush and refill it with some new juice. if anything they'll tell you if its worth it to replair of just replace.
