Not exactly G-body, but same era. Were 80’s transmissions stamped with the partial vin? I have a th400 that I want to know if it was original or not in a truck. If so, where was it stamped on them? The tag is correct for the engine and model though. Thanks

Driver side. Along the side of the pan flange. They were sometimes on a pad area just above that depending on the transmission.
That’s what I had read, but nothing there. Maybe it’s a little dirty yet that I didn’t see it. I also read somewhere that the mid 70’s they quit stamping them. I guess also, if it might have been replaced under warranty, it could potentially have the correct year on the tag, but no stamping for vin.

Look on the drivers side of the bellhousing.

as an aside, for those who are researching any 4L60 transmissions from gen 3/4 LS motor combo's, you will find it on the trailing edge of the transmission flange. however, if it is still inside the original vehicle, good luck trying to read it as they mounted the transmission crossmember right in front of it. this becomes important when you find out they had a couple different revisions during the manufacturing year and you need the right one to match up with PCM/ECM.
