trouble starting engine

HA! Even after hundreds of jobs it's easy to screw that up, for sure. Actually pointing directly at #1 gets you 0* BTDC. Most motors need around 8-12 degrees advance, so pointing right at #1 should correspond to whatever your initial timing is. This way the spark doesn't have to "reach" for the terminal.
 
I pulled the dizzy and realigned it like everyone suggested and it FINALLY started! 😀 Now time to mount it in the car! Thanks everyone for your advice!
