Hi guys. I am sorry for asking a billion questions but I am new to the G-Body scene and I would like to really build a nice SS since everything around here (my neighborhood) is Mustangs and civics (blah!)

I have a 1985 Monte Carlo SS and I have subplanted a SBC 406 with a nice big set of AFR 2.10 heads and biig ole Lunati cam. For headers I went with Heddman Hustler 1 7/8 Headers. I would like to go with a 3 inch true dual system which either runs OVER the rear axles or dumps right before the rear axle.

Now here is my question(s):

1)- What exhaust are YOU running?
a)- Do you have any pictures and/or exhaust videos of the sound?

2)- Which Mufflers would YOU go with/went with?
b)- Do you think bullets would be better than full mufflers?

3)- Where could I buy the exhaust you are suggesting?
c)- How much did the exhaust cost you in the end? (no pun intended)

I have a guy local to me who I trust. He owns a shop and quoted me roughly 300 dollars to fab up a 2.5 inch to a 3 inch NON-mandrel bent exhaust system over the rear axles. I would have to supply the mufflers though. He suggested Flowmaster 40 series. I have used flowmaster in he past and they are good but I am "tired" of anytime you ask people what exhaust they have, its always FLOWMASTER.

I had a few years back a 2001 Camaro SS with a sbc 408 LS based motor. It was a snarling non-daily driver with a serious attitude and a nice 10.8 second slip to go with it. I went to AMERICAN RACING HEADERS to do a full true dual fab up system. For anyone that knows F-bodies, you know most have Y pipes and they people that DO have true duals, they are ALWAYS under the rear axle or dumped. Nick (the owner of ARH) fabbed up one of the SICKEST exhaust systems I have ever seen. Full Stainless Steel 3 inch true duals with (4) four Magnaflow bullet mufflers (2) two before rear axle and (2) two after rear axle. Full Mandrel bent system. It was an absolute thing of beauty. The price? Well lets say it this way. My wife smacked me TWICE in the face when I got home and told her how much we spent. I wasnt expecting the price to be THAT drastic but it winded up costing me (without the headers) 3 thousand with materials and installation. And the headers were 900 which I previously bought from QTP and had someone else install them. Everyone in the world that seen my exhaust was in awe and Nick got ALOT of business from people do to the ststem he made for me. Everything was also able to be uninstalled since he used nice clamps. Reason for me saying all this is because before I bought the headers for the monte I called him up and asked for a price quote fo 1 7/8 headers with merge collector. He claimed he didnt have a jig for it and it would take (5) five to (7) seven days to "build" me a set of headers. I asked him how much and he quoted me (2500) twenty-five hundred dollars JUST for the headers and installation. And if I wanted a true dual setup full mandrel bent, he would do me a "favor" and only charge me 4,000.00) four thousand dollars for everything. I am not bashing Nick or American Racing Headers since he is truely the best shop in the country when it comes to exhaust and he gets every ounce of power out of your motor with his breathtaking exhaust but I am in NO WAY paying (4000) four thousand dollars for exhaust. So, please. If you were going to suggest ARH please dont. Unless, you have a USED system you would like to sell.

Again, I am in NO WAY trying to bash ANY company and I would recommend ARH any day of the week to anyone if they had the money. Nick is a truely unbelievably nice guy and does the sickest work in the world.

Now, back on topic. What do you guys suggest in the way of exhaust work?

Thank you for all your help in advance and have a pleasant day. God Bless

That is a bunch fo different systems that work with G-bodys. I also have heard good things about the Pypes systems. I didn't pick a certain one because I don't know if you want stainless or aluminized. Also, I didn't know if you were gonna go with 2.5" or 3". I'd go 3" because it sounds like you'll be flowing a pretty decent amount of air and it leaves you room for expansion.

Also, you'll need to buy one of these:

depending on your transmission and application. You could also fabricate your stock crossmember by adding two notches big enough for the exhaust system. It all depends on your financial situation I suppose.

I honestly wouldn't recommend any off-brand mufflers I've come across. As far as I've seen and heard, Flowmasters are some of the best sounding you can get unless you want to buy even more expensive.

As far as the system itself goes, I wish I would have gone with dumping it before the rear axle. I think it would sound better and I don't like the look of the tailpipes under the rear of the car especially since they're just aluminized steel. Its pretty much just a cosmetic preference I suppose.

my current setup is a pair of 1/5/8 inch hooker super comp headers, 2.5 inch mandrel bent pipes with an x pipe, over the axle and exit out behind the rear tires like 442 and grand national, a pair of 40 series flowmasters. with the old setup(350 sbc with vortec heads and a comp xtreme energy 268 grind) it had a nice deep lopey idle, a great deep sound at cruise, and was just awsome at wot. you could here if for about 1/2 mile at wide open throttle. got many compliments on the sound of the car. it was nice at idle, you could here it inside but it wasn't overpowering, as at cruise. The pipes were from muffler tech and were 295 shipped without muffles(already had them) but this was back in late 2005. I also used a g-force crossmember for the true dual setup. it just bolted right in. Now i am just waiting on my 421 sbc to be finished.
