There are issues with building a diesel hot rod. Now this is not to bash diesels as there are many diesel cars I would love to own for their practicality. That being said, the main issue is weight. Yes, it will go fairly well down a race track if you can hook it and you gear it with a tall enough set of gears (those 2.14's FINALLY have a purpose!). It will be fairly fuel efficient too. However, it will not handle or brake very well. Plus, the fuel system will need to be modified to work with a modern diesel. There are plenty of electronics that are needed to make a Duramax run which will need to be adapted to your car. It will also need a SUBSTANTIALLY stronger rear axle, and the native transmission to survive the launch stress that extra torque will give it. I am not at all opposed to a diesel hot rod, but in a car I would rather use a modern V6 or L6 turbo diesel instead of a V8 as I feel it would offer a much better compromise in a street car. The problem with a 6 is that there is no suitable engine sold in a passenger vehicle in the US with a diesel 6. There are in Europe, but not here.
BTW, my all time favorite diesels would be : Mercedes Benz W123 with a OM-617 (extra points for the Euro-spec 5 speed taxi model!), or maybe a diesel VW Rabbit. I tend to prefer older models without EFI for their robustness and ease of repair over modern diesels which are more powerful, but expensive to fix for the average man. They may be slow, but after a nuclear attack they will still be running as the EMP will have no effect on their electrical systems!
