I have a 1980 monte carlo with a 1986 monte carlo ss rearend in it and today I went to grease the rear u joint and noticed that the drive shaft moves around in the u joint straps all the 4 bolts are tight do I need smaller u joint straps if so what kinds and part number? Thanks

To be honest, if the correct one was installed there shouldn't be a need for bigger caps or the need to get different retaining straps. There are many combinations of the cap sizes but there is no guarantee that the cap I.D. with needle bearings in place will be the same size even knowing what part number was installed & just grabbing one with the needed O.D. off the shelf. In this case a new U joint meeting the needed specs would be suggested.

I would start by removing the straps and verifying the current driveshaft u-joint fits snug in the rear end yoke.
