I was afraid if I removed mine it would affect the paint, but since it was torn and starting to fall onto the belts I just said screw it and pulled it off. A year later and the paint hasn't been affected at all and there isn't any significant increase in volume.
 
Ok cool imma pull mine off tomorrow and say f it
 
both mine sagged down and i ripped em both off and left it bare. no problems from what i can see either.
 
i removed the jute padding under the hood after little critters outside decided it would make nice bedding material. I pained my car back in 2003, never had an issue with paint failure due to the engine heat. If your worried just spray the bottom of the hood black with some heat paint. The only case where i think you would want to keep the padding is on the GN's being they have the additional heat coming from the turbo
 
Mikesmontes sells them on ebay for about $45. It comes with the plastic clips to install it as factory. And as everybody else said it won't hurt anything to leave it off. Look at all the old cars at car shows with big motors and see how many you find with out it...
 
Thats wat imma do most likely.
