I went to the auto parts store recently to get universal joints for the driveshaft on my car. The problem I have now is that there are two types universal joints with different snap rings. Which type of snap rings would a 1986 Regal 307 V8, 200-R4, 7.5 have? There is apparently an open ended "C" clip and another one that odd shaped and is enclosed. I was told that you can tell by looking at them on the car, but I just want to make sure if anyone has replaced theirs and knows for sure. Any help would be appreciated.

The factory used injected plastic to hold the joints in. Pressing out the joints ruins the plastic so the clips are needed. My 83' used the inner "C" clip type which go inboard of the yokes.See the groove on the joints? They go onto those. Those others you need a groove in the outboard edge of the yokes to use. Eyeball the yokes and see if there is a groove there.

FWIW my 87 monte w/200r4 had the first (pic) type.

I got a chance to get a good look at mine, and it does look like the one in the first picture (the one with the C-clips). Thanks for all the input.
