Upper control arm bumpers

Anyone know the procedure to install new upper control arm bumpers on 84 El Camino? I tried teflon lube and pulling them into the slot but tore the top off the first one. Don't want to break the other one. Need to replace one already.

Changing the control arm bushings is a serious PITA. The Haynes manual just says to take it to a mechanic.

Here's what the GM Chassis Manual says, verbatim:

1. Removal: Remove upper control arm assembly from car
2. Remove nuts from ends of pivot shaft
3. Position control arm assembly and tools and pushing bushing out of control arm.

1.To install bushings, place pivot shaft in control arm and push new bushing onto control arm and over end of pivot shaft. On "G" series models, both upper control arm bushings are to be installed 13.3 +/- .5 mm from the face of the control arm to the bushing outer sleeve.
2. Assemble nuts to ends of pivot shaft
3. Install the upper control arm assembly

The diagrams show the use of a special tool to do this, btw. Not sure what it's called, looks like a C-clamp with some attachment on the end.

Upper control arm "bumpers" or stops

I have all the bushings installed. Thank you. The problem is the rubber bumpers or stops. They install into a slot on the upper control arm. Can't seem to get them to fit thru the slot! Tried teflon and water based lubricants but I am tearing the rubber trying to get them thru the slot.

Maby freezing the bump stops will help. See if you can find gum remover for carpets in your area. that shi* is cold and might do the trick.
