Hello,

I think that for most of you my question will seem very stupid but I'm new to the V6 world and as I live in Europe, I don't have the background that you have.

I have a V6 in my 78 Malibu wagon, on the tag, it says that it's a 200ci.

So I ordered some parts from Rockauto but some don't fit my engine...(air filter, water neck, water hoses,...).....is Rockauto wrong or is my engine wrong....

My V6 has the distributor on the front (radiator side ) like V8 Buicks.

My radiator neck is a metal one and said to be "Buick style" in the Haynes , and on the Rockauto website it is said to go on a 231ci (Buick engine I think) ! https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/morein ... cc=1054976

How can I recognise my engine ?

Is a 200ci similar to a 231ci Buick ?

I don't have pictures for instance but...
My engine looks like this one : except color, my distributor has no coil (HEI ?), and alternator is higher...

Which engine is it and with which engine are the parts similar ?

Thanks for your help !

David

David,
If your engine looks like the one in the picture it is a Buick 231 V6. The closest engine that shares similarities to the 231 is a Buick 350, which I believe most of the front accessories will interchange. The Chevy 200 and 229 would have had the distributors in the back of the engine. It's quite possible that your radiator shroud may have been changed at some point which may have had a different tag on it. I'm unsure of what differences these cars came with in Europe but that's what I would suspect.

Thanks for your help !

I'm happy to know that I have a 231, the tag and registration say that it's a 200 but some things must have been changed over the years....

I know about V8 Buick as I have a 72 Skylark Coupe. Nice to also have a Buick engine in my Chevrolet ! ;-)

The Buick V6 was fitted in the factory to a range of G Body cars. The alternator on the engine in the picture is where an air conditioning pump would be if fitted.
I believe the 200ci engine is a straight 6 made by Chevrolet, Almost nothing is interchangeable with the V6.
What parts do you need?, I have some from when I owned a '79 Buick Century and I'm closer than North America! 🙂.

The 200 is what actually replaced the 250 inline six from what I've read. The 200 shared the same bore/stroke as the 267. The 229 shared the same bore/stroke as the 305. The 200 was only made in '78 & '79 and it was a real DOG! I had a Malibu with one and it couldn't get out of it's own way. Next to having a 4.1 HT in an '83 Fleetwood Coupe, it was by far one of the most mismatched power to weight ratio cars I've ever driven.
