So Im finishing the strip job on my 454 (1988 suburban engine) when i got the valve covers off there were these sleeves around the valve springs, I have had several engines apart and back together. and havent seen anything like this before, Question: will this cause me any grief with a .500 lift cam, and just wondering what the heck is the purpose of the sleeves?
Thanks Greg

Here is what im talking about

Sorry, I can't help you with what the covers are on the springs, I have never seen anything like that. I would recommend that if you are putting in a big new cam, that you upgade the Valve Springs with some heavy duties.

can you post pics of the sleeves?

I think you're talking about the valve spring oil shields.

You can remove them for high lift cam applications, but you'll need to buy the right spring caps to put in their place. Some shields were short (about 1/4 of the spring length) while others were quit long and almost bottomed on the heads with stock lift.

Thanks, I had a heck of a time even figgering out how to put a pic up,how do i resize? dial up sucks 😢

usually the photo uploader service that you use will give you the option to resize the pic. if not, in your computers files, right click on the picture and one of the options should be to resize. i think on most forums the maximum height is 100 pixels. hth

i see it now, when i first checked the post they were no pics. probably my stupid *ss computer. :x
