I've got a 1986 roller 307 Olds that is going to be rebuilt with a new GM H.O./VIN 9 cam. Where would I get valve springs that would work for this application? I have come the understand the VIN Y type are not stiff enough. Also, is there such a thing as getting valve springs that are too stiff for an engine? I'm not sure where to look for a set.

I can't help on a part number but I'd get the lift and duration numbers of your cam and give Comp Cams, Crane, or any other cam company a call and see what they recommend for springs.

Yes, you can get springs that are too strong. Added spring pressure does no good and only increase wear on lifters (even roller lifters) and cam lobes. You want enough pressure to close the valve and keep the valve from bouncing on the seat after closing. Any more pressure just wears the roller bearings and puts added pressure to the lobes.

X2 call a cam company and ask them. know what cam, lifters, heads, and maybe other engine info ready.

Ok, sounds like I am going to have to call and see. Would aftermarket companies sell a valve spring for a mild factory style cam? I was hoping someone who rebuilt a 307 might know from experience (but no one rebuilds 307s I guess).

Would Mondello be a good place to call? I haven't heard anything good about them lately but they are the Oldsmobile specialists.

get you some comp beehives, and call it a day

So are those supposed to be like a variable rate coil spring? Would that really work on a regular duty engine?

yes they will work great, and if you decide to upgrade to a larger cam most likely you can use the same spings, but they are pricey.

when you get your motor rebuilt, just have the guy at the machine shop put your valve springs to your spec of the cam, but for a hyd roller you want about 125 -135 on the seat --no idea on the open press. but that probally will be alot cheaper that beehive, besides i don't think the 307 is going to see alot of 5500+ rpm so ignore me other post.
