That box is probably better made then anything built today.
I can't remember the last time I saw a toolbox that size in a store that wasn't plastic.

Lmao as a Millwright and a Tradesman I can say that I'm glad I'm not lugging a big bad boy like that up and down stairs of the factorys. But thats gunna be a sweet box for a hot rod garage. Are you gunna paint it red?

Re: Vintage Craftsman Toolbox Restoration

I have the smaller version of that tool box. I think it was my very first box. It's over 40 yrs old. I think I repainted it once with silver/grey hammertone paint. I think I paid like $5.00 for it back then. Yeah, i know, I'm dating myself.

That's a great suggestion. Hammerite would be a good option for a tool box. Pretty tough stuff if the prep is done right.

Re: Vintage Craftsman Toolbox Restoration

It used to be a lot easier to find the Hammerite brand of paint. I honestly think the Hammerite brand is better than the Rustoleum. Although the Rustoleum Hammertone is some pretty tough stuff.
In fact, I repainted my top box Hammertone silver, and it's pretty durable paint. I probably need to repaint the lower cabinet as well....and redo the top box to match.
I've never tried spraying it from the quart can. I'm pretty sure it has to be mixed with acetone or Xylene... :?: Not quite sure.

Thanks. That's because this is a carpenter's box, so it's typically larger. A millwright ideally uses a mechanic's box. I actually think I'm gonna paint it the original greyish- green color.

The original finish appears to be some sort of hammerite equivelant paint.
