Volt Light and Hot Headlight switch

OK i have a 81 regal i just had to replace the Headlight switch... Due to it smoking and getting really really hot the volt light is still on and the new one is starting to get hot to .... if i take out the switch the volt light Dims.... and Ideas

sounds like the regulator in the alternator is shot and it's pumping more volts than the system can handle
