Want to install a head unit into my Malibu

Well Future Shop didn't have one. So I guess I'm gonna have to do some custom fitting lol. And damn, I was really hoping to install a CD player easily for once. :?

If it still has the old dual shaft radio, the kits won't do you much good. You are going to have to cut up the factory faceplate to fit an aftermarket radio in. I suggest getting a spare plate to keep the original unhacked. The CD player itself should come with a sleeve that you will fit into the opening once cut and the radio will slide in and snap in place.

The kits are only good for the later model 1.5 DIN factory radio cars.

Yeah I know what you mean. But that factory faceplate looks pretty flimsy. And I know it has to be cut either way. I was just hoping for the deck to have more support than a weak thin piece of plastic.

Oh, and btw, is that your car in the pic (the one with the stick)?

I hate you if it is.

But seriously, that is a sweet looking car (from what I can see of the interior).

I know what you mean - you may be able to come up with some way to support it with brackets. I don't think I ever had any extra support and it was never a problem (aftermarket radios are a fair amount lighter). Just make sure you cut the opening for a perfect fit with the aftermarket radios sleeve.

Thats my car in both pics - I installed the 5-speed last winter. Thanks for the kind words 🙂

Wow I just read your write up on the car. It sounds pretty cool. I really like the 5-speed. I put a stick in a '80 GP I used to have. G-body's with sticks are so fun to drive. 8)

you could always do wireless ipod install .. just get a fm transmiter and a ipod car charger nd keep it origanal nd still have the music you want ...

If you are worried about supporting the case, get a broken original radio and hollow it out. Then, build a support structure inside it to hold the radio up.

Easier idea for support... make a backing plate from some other plastic or light wood and glue it to the back of the original plastic to reinforce it. This will spread the load out, and should only fail if the glue lets go.

And 85SS, you can pretty much count on my vote for ROTM. Your car is the reason we should limit winners to once a year. That car is almost cheating.
