Poosibly it was a 350 car with TBI. 3.42 or higher sounds more like a GM combo. Sounds more like someone did a nice job of making it look factory.

My first car was a 1979 monze Spyder. It was pretty nice when I first got it. Was pretty much all original when I got it. It was silver with red interior. It had a 305 and a TH350. The transmission had an RV shift kit. And the 305 I put new oil pump, new cam (GM replacement from a 350HP 350), lifters, and double roller timing set. I also replaced the 2 bbl carb with a Quadrajet from a 350 and a stock GM aluminum intake. i backed it off with duals (off the stock manifolds) that had small (like 8"-10") blue bottle glass packs, that angled down right before the rear end. As for the rear end, that was the one weak point on the car. Open ended 2:29s, but the cars light weight made up for the bad gears. It had a few changes over the years. different wheels, 350, B&M shifter, sprayed the hood flat black, and evantuall ran the exhaust out the back.
WOW another Spyder owner. Bought my very own first car in 1989. Mine was was a 1978 Spyder. White 305 / th350 with the Black Widow on the hood. With an oil change and a fresh set of tires I drove that car from Ontario to Alberta in 2 days flat. It was full of rot and primer all over but a blast to drive. I would love to find another but all that power in a light short wheelbase car was like handling a bar of soap on the shower floor.
Rather I would like to have my '80 Calais back, buckets, console, dual exhaust and I could now actually afford to fix the A/C which was broken the whole time I owned the car. LOL
