I need to search some junkyards and come up with another crossmember for the TH400 in my '85 Cutlass. I know some Monte SS's and '78 Regals had them. What else should I crawl under??

85- up Gbody typically had the 200r4. Before that they mostly had the 3speed 350c or th200.
The th400 will need the kickdown bracket to the carb from an 84-down gbody unless it's a full manual.

The TH-2004R wasn't available in a G-body before '83 so a '78 regal wouldn't have had one.
Then someone I work with is going to have to stop claiming his is all original...

What do you mean by "full manual"? My understanding of that term is an automatic without a governor that must be manually shifted. I had a transmission shop install my th400 when the car still had the 307 and drove it around for three months with no problems. The only thing I see hooked up are the shift linkage, speedometer cable and the vacuum hose to the governor.

Yes you are correct on both counts, Full manual has no Auto / Drive setting and you must manually shift gears 1-3 ( thus removing the need for a kickdown ). The th400 does not use a kick-down cable ( In my mind I was thinking th350 which does). The 400 used a pedal mounted switch for the kickdown ( tried to find one many many years ago for a freind when he swapped in a TH400 ). The governor works just fine for cruising around town but if you want to mash the pedal and go then the kickdown switch works much better.

I take it these are difficult to find? I recall reading somewhere that a person could convert a transmission into a full manual by swapping out a few parts. Do you know if there's any truth to that?

If you can find a truck equipped with the TH400 then you could use the pedal from that vehicle ( it's a slider attached to the pedal assembly ) which would be rare around here. You could probably EBAY one that is used for cheap or pick up an aftermarket unit from Jegs, Summit ect...
