What does L and S mean on a floor shift cutlass?

Mine had 1 2 D and the a D within a circle for overdrive. What Cutlass shifter are you talking about?
 
Low gear and second gear. Not sure why they didn't just put 1 and 2 but that's the way it is.
 
IIRC...L is for 1st gear only, for like pulling stumps or burning off the rear retread, and S is for second gear only...like for driving on snow or muddy conditions. I think Olds wanted to be differnt and only use letters instead of numbers. Go figure....
 
it would have been helpful if they set it up so when you do put it in S you start off in second gear so if you are stuck in snow the tires have a chance to grip ....

Some newer vehicles do that.
My 79 cutlass had the DSL on the column shift indicator too.
