Back in '96 I was looking for a daily driver to get me to school and work. My parents junked the '77 s/c'd Nova that I was driving a year earlier and I wanted to get another Nova. This was back way before we got the internet, so I was scoping out the classfieds and Auto Trader. Well, I found a '76 Nova for $1500 in some ad in a used car lot. It looked good, so I dragged my father down to see it. It was stuck in the rear corner of the lot against the fence. It did look as good as the pic advertised. Then my father went through a hole in the fence and went on the other side; he motioned me to come over to have a look. The rear driver's side of the car was smashed up pretty good. The owner of the lot said "$1500 firm as we walked out. We drove a block away and sighted another used car lot and decided to have a look. I was looking at the usual crap that a lot has lying around and then spotted the '78 Malibu. So we walked over to it and looked it over. The body had surface rust in some spots and was sitting low in the front. The owner of the lot came over and said he'd sell it to us for $750. My father told him to start it up. It took him a little bit, but it started up. It was running rough and being that I didn't know what I know now, I didn't recognize the sound of a lumpy cam. So I started to walk away. My father stayed there and talked with the guy. My father called me over and explained to me that the car has a non-stock 427 BBC that was blown up by the previous owner and patched back together. He also said that I can get all of the original powertrain and drivetrain from the previous owner for free. At the time I wanted to get another Nova and this Malibu was looking to be a lemon, but I reluctantly signed the check and limped the Malibu home. The following two weeks were spent retrieving and reinstalling the 305 sbc/TH200 combo into the car. I kept that Malibu for 11 years before selling it for a truck.
