what is involved.....

It is a pretty common conversion. I would not reuse the heads it comes with though as they pretty much suck unless they are Vortec heads. I am thinking of building a new engine for my car and will probably try to source one of these TBI 350 blocks to do it with. They come with roller cams and one piece rear main seals, which are not as prone to leaks as the 2 piece seals are. The roller cam is an advantage because it lets you reuse the lifters and hardware with a better cam. The roller cam allows for a much more aggressive lift curve and therefore more air flow for a given duration and better power without sacrificing idle quality.

Oh, and BTW, I used the 3.8 V6 throttle cable on my 350. I just scavenged a throttle cable bracket from a 305 powered 80's carburated something in the junkyard. Doesn't matter what, just so long as it has a Quadrajet and a Chevy engine and was made in the 80's. Extra bonus points if you score a non computer Quadrajet too. The Quadrajet is a good carburetor when it is set up right, and it has the physical benefits of proper TV cable geometry built in, and it is shorter than most aftermarket carbs for better hood clearance.

If you are planning on this swap in the future, gather parts starting now. Be sure to scavenge all the little clips, nuts, bolts, fasteners, etc that you can and keep them organized. Take old parts that others are giving away or throwing out that may help you. That stock air cleaner may not be sexy, but it works in a pinch, as do things like intake manifolds and exhaust manifolds. Read my parts list (sticky at top of the page) to get an idea as to all of what is needed. I got my Holley fuel pump for free as well as my cold air setup, some brackets, stock valve covers, etc from a friend of mine whose Camaro I updated. I found my Edelbrock Performer intake for $15 at the U pull it. I have since found many more of them in old pickups and vans as well as cars, as recently as a few months back.

Just wanted to add to this. Not all of the tbi 350 blocks have roller cams. And the block may not have a provision for a mechanical fuel pump. Even if it does the stock cam may not have an eccentric for the feul pump either.

Thanks for all the very helpful info guys! I'm not sure whether or not to buy this now after knowing all the facts. I'm thinking it would be cheaper to just find an already carb'ed motor, rather than switching from fuel injection.

After the cost of heads, an intake manifold, dist., electronic fuel pump (possibly) and all the other little things, I think I could have a more solid starting point on a carbed motor. Does that sound about right?

Again, thanks for the great info!! This is why I love this forum 😀

$100 if it's complete is a good price. If you're planning on building a motor, pick it up. You'll have all your bases covered for a decent street motor. A set of Vortec heads, carbed intake, mechanical fuel pump (so long as the hole is drilled), and a decent cam... you won't be sorry 😉

Well, just take a look and see if it has the fuel pump provision. If it does, you are good to go. As for the heads, it is cheaper to buy new ones than to rework an old set. GM hasn't put good heads on a stock SBC since the early 70's except maybe the L-82 heads and the Vortec heads from the mid to late 90's. There are plenty of budget head options available to you. I would not rebuild any SBC with a set of stock heads anymore. It just doesn't make any sense from a cost-benefit analysis.

Agreed. My Vortecs were in pretty good shape (valve guides weren't worn), just needed a lot of cleaning. So I took them apart, cleaned all the valves, and put new valve guide seals in.

Hmmmm. Thats very true. The motor doesn't have all the brackets and acessories though. But then again $100

In case anyone wanted to know or anything, I talked to the kid, and its a TBI motor, from either 86 or 87 whichever the first year for fuel injection was for the chevy trucks. [/quote]

A little update. I talked to the kid today, It has the swirlport heads, but he has an extra set of vortecs "laying around" as well as an intake, HEI dist. the motor will take a mechanical fuel pump too. he said him and his dad would help me fix it up and put it back together and even help me drop it in my car!!!

Well what are yo doing chating on here? Go get to work!

^^Thats what I need, a little motivation

I'm going to the junkyard in about an hour to get the V8 radiator and hoses, fan, fan shroud, motor mounts, and just locate a transmission and posi gears. I'll be going over to my buddys house to check everything out and organize eberything before we get started. 8)
