That is a G80 gov-lock otherwise known as a hand grenade. i have one in my zr2 s10. it shouldnt be stock in any gbody axle. they are know to blow to pieces in a high horsepower situation

I had one in my Malibu wagon. I ran a Pontiac 400, 4 speed stick, and that kind of part-time posi with 3:23 gears. No problems at all and it was great in the snow using real snow tires. I would NOT use it for any kind of racing, but as always, fit the punishment to the crime.

It's behind a 455 do I need to worry? And this is supposed to be a 8.5 posi how would I go about confirming that?

Applications:
Will fit many GM vehicles equipped with an 8.5 inch 10 bolt c clip axles. Side gears are 30 Splines. Note that some axles from vehicles in the following list may have had 28 or 30 spline shafts. 30 spline axle shafts are typically found on 1997 and newer GM vehicles.

Typical applications from 1997 - up:

Yukon 1500 1/2 ton: 92-00
other full size GM vehicles

It was used in a lot of heavy vehicles so I'm guessing it is stout enough for stock usage. But a 455 may be over the line, especially if you plan on hot rodding it and/or beating it up. It differs from a clutch type posi in that it has a centrifical weight that as the slipping wheel speeds up, the weight flies out and then the posi engages. So in the snow my wheel would spin, then go "clunk!" as the posi kicked in. I'm thinking a worked 455 would split it open like a watermelon.

Looking in summit and these limited slips arent cheap. Is there anywhere else I could be looking for another. What should I be looking for to live behind the 455. It is built up a little. But if I leave this in there and it does blow minus the cover would it damage anything.

I doubt it would damage the structure of the rear end housing. It might damage the axles. Pretty much the guts of the housing would probably have to be replaced if it came apart. Now, if it just fails, stops working, then nothing would really be damaged.
