By freshened up I mean new rod & main bearings, oil pump. Also, the block was not decked and I didn't change the pistons. 10.6:1 sounds a lot more reasonable than 12.1:1. Thanks for the input, much appreciated!
A 305 has a 3.48 stoke, not 4 inch. Got eagle specialty products website for a compression ratio calculator. It is pretty accurate, came up with 11-2-1 for my buddy's 383. On dyno day at the machine shop checked er with the whistle and it was 11-1.
I was under the impression that the 305 came with a 3.48 stroke 3.75 bore and 9.025 deck height from the factory.
I would say a NGK heat range of 5 or 6 would probably work best.
I believe I have a NGK 6 in my engine right now with 10.9 compression with aluminum heads on my BBC and it works well and doesn't load up from extended idling like a colder 8 will.
I do have a couple sets of colder plugs (8 and 9) pre gapped for nitrous use but they will foul out with constant street driving.
Ok so I looked it up and I find a bore of 3.736 stock, and 3.48 stroke enter them numbers with an assumed .035 deck drop and now you get 9.8-1 even more believable
