And where can I find a steel geared timing set?
If you can't find one locally Summit Racing has a good amount to choose from and you can probably add it to your order if you are getting a carb, intake etc.
I was actually was going try to get more power out of my V6 in my 81' Regal that I had before my Monte, but not long after getting all the parts I got an awesome deal on a rebuilt 400 SBC that was in the owners sons Blazer that his wife rolled so I ended up going that route, that was my first taste of power and I never looked back.

Thanks my I ask what all parts did you have planned to put in your regal?

sorry double post but forgot the emissions part,as stated in the other thread pretty much yank the computer, get rid of the air system plug the holes with npt pipe plugs though REMEMBER to get the little flutes in the air ports out, spray with a bit of pb blaster than tap a flat head into the port, dont go nuts but when you feel a bit of resistance twist it alittle and yank it out.get rid of the cat and strait pipe it back to the muffler, obtain vac advance distributor and carb not much over 450 cfm to optimal performance...too big a carb and your gonna have issues.pretty much what everyone else has told you but i didnt see mention of the air port flutes so remember those they do screw up exhaust flow a bit.atleast the 3.8 is semi bullet proof, pretty decent engine to do some learning on
Thanks for the information that's exactly what I was looking for. I'm really just trying to restore the car but make it better than original, and get away from the sucky 2bbl and all the emissions crap.

It was long ago but I think I bought a Edelbrock Performer intake and cam kit, timing chain, headers and a small Holley carb but I sent it all back to Summit and ordered parts to fit the SBC in, I actually saved money since the 400 was already a running engine plus I got power the V6 can only dream of in N/A form.

Lots of people put nitrous on the 3.8 😛 But yeah. A Qjet would be a good carb with jet and metering rod changes because it will only use *** of the 750cfm its capable of flowing for a certain application. Very versatile carbs when set up right, but so are the others. Just get headers and dont even worry about dicking with the stock exhaust. Get a dual exhaust kit for a G Body and delete the cats or if you are legally required to have them get high flow ones. The Nylon timing gears are terrible and you should get a roller set from COMP or Cloyes along with an edelbrock top end kit. Get an oil pump rebuild kit too. DO NOT get the high volume, a standard rebuild kit from TA Performance (has every Buick part you can imagine by the way, from the 3.8 to the 455) or Melling will do just fine. TA Sells a booster plate that gives the steel gears a better place to rub against other than the soft aluminum timing cover. Ditch the computer and distributor. Get a non computer distributor. One from a Buick 350 would fit but you'd need a 6 prong cap of course. Basically just rounding up what everyone else said along with some of my own advice.

Kind of detracing from your goal, but why a 3.8? all these modifications and you'd still have what... 200hp if you're lucky? A 350 Buick would drop in 100% or a Chevy/Olds V8 can be made to fit with ease.

eh sometimes you just wanna play with whats there simply for the f%^k of it lol.but yeah in reality the intake alone will cost about as much if not more than a rebuildable 350 or what have you.well maybe i havent priced any buick parts but an aftermarket intake for an olds anything is about 300 bucks give or take.lucky chevy bastards =P

I'm not to much worried about hp on the regal i have a 99 trans am for that, I just want to restore the car and make the 3.8 better than factory
