I finally found a 8.5 rear end for my el camino. It is a posi unit with fairly new eaton unit. What should be done before installing it? New seals, bearings, etc.
Thanks

If it wasnt done when the eaton unit was installed, i would at least check everything over good and replace anything that you might question

It wouldn't hurt to check the backlash and the teeth contact patterns so if it was done recently you can check to see if it was done right...

how much $$$ you hve ?

cheapest is to paint it and try it as is ..... if leaks ,change seals , if noisy check bearings & gear adjustment otherwise leave it ...it might be ok!

I say just clean it up and look it over.

Drive it, break it, and then fix whatever breaks. It's not like it is that much harder to work on in the car. In the current economy, why replace parts that may not be broken.

it may not be much harder to work on rear end when it's in the car if the car is parked in your garage but if it breaks down a 100 miles from home then it's a bit harder to fix it...I still say that it's easy enough to check the set up and the bearings while it's out of the car and if there is any problems it's cheaper to replace parts that are worn out than it is to replace the worn out parts plus the parts those worn out parts destroyed....and if it's not set up properly shims are alot cheaper than a set of gears...
