whatr g bodys have posi andwhat kind should i buy?

what g bodys usually come with posi rear ends if any ? i wnat to keep an eye out in junk yard and what would be best fit for my 79malibu or 79 elcamino ? i know theres 8 inch 8.5 etc etc ... thanks any help appreciated

which gbody usually came with posi? thats hard to answer, its was a option, not standard equip. grand national, 442 had the 8.5'' ring gear, monte ss had 7 5/8'' ring gear, the rest of gbody had 7.5'' ring gear. grand national 3:42 ratio, olds 442 3:73 ratio, monte ss 3:42-3:73 ratio. i found a few posi in junk yard, i looked on the inside of trunk lid, if it has g80 on the option sticker, its came out with posi. hope this had help. i would buy a 8.5. i do have a 8"ford rear, it a spool, and 4:56 ratio, it has a new richmond gear,that bolt up to any gbody. it really built to go straight.

thanks yes i heard the 85 -87 monte ss had the posi and thata 8.5 would be ok but if itsa metric car the mounts may be different and i may have to reweld them ... i found one on craigslist for 225 $ from a monte 8.5 sound likea good deal?

Ummm... as bigblockfrank stated above, Monte Carlo SS came with 7 5/8" not 8.5...And just because it was out of a SS car does not mean it is a posi.. 225.00 is a good price for a 10 bolt posi though...No rewelding necessary on any G-Body stock rear end. Pull the cover to make sure it is a posi before buying it! Tim

Look for 1982-87 Camaro/Firebird, Look in the center console and glove box for the code G80 . Also look at pre 1988 S10, S15 , GM mini vans.Your looking for a 26 spline posi as 1988 and up came with 28 spline .
