i thought straight pipes meant, headers, pipes, then exit. but i see a lot of "straight pipe" set ups just with out mufflers or resonators. is the term acceptable to use if you run cats?

I consider straight pipes to be no cats, muffler, or resonators. I'm sure some have their own opinions though.

Some say straight pipes are no cats and each bank of the engine has its own pipe and muffler with no exhaust cross over like an H or X pipe.

Yes, just like Kansas and surgeon said. 50 something years ago (yeah, I'm a baby boomer too) people would say their exhaust went "straight" (meaning no mufflers) from the exhaust manifold to the rear bumper. Some would even run the pipes straight back (no elbows or bends) UNDER the rear axle tubes. Lead sleds were the low riders back then.

In southern Indiana, straight pipes mean just exhaust pipes, no converters or mufflers.
