What contact glue?

I find that the spray can adhesives are inconsistent to say the least. I've used several different brand commercial adhesives. Some work better than others. Doing a headliner, you try coating the headliner board and fabric separately, yet trying to get enough adhesive on both parts can be challenging. I find that it dries quickly.
I have thought of using a cheapy siphon feed gun using Weldwood adhesive. I think the results would have been much better.

This is how I always saw vinyl tops done “back in the day”
Brian,
I've also watched guys doing vinyl tops at a Buick dealer that I used to work for. I also redid the vinyl sail panels on one of my past cars using good ole' Weldwood adhesive with excellent results.
In fact, a local upholstery shop that has done odd jobs for me over the years has done my original headliner using a siphon feed gun with a heavy duty adhesive that sure looked like Weldwood.

I dunno. I've done about 752 headliners in my day. I exaggerate to clarify. Maybe it was more like 3 or 4. Anyway, I've always used the 3M 77 headliner spray and none of them have ever fallen down or off. Like I said, it's all about the prep. Hardest part with non-T-tops is getting it out of the car with the glass and interior still in it. The foam headliner is way lighter than the vinyl tops or carpet boards, so I'd probably opt for a spray gun mix myself for that stuff. But for foam headliners, the 77 works well. When directions are followed, it seems kinda easy. Layout foam cover on headliner board. Flip 1/2 of headliner material back on itself. Coat board, coat foam with a medium coat. Wait until kinda dry, then roll it out from center to edge using a small, CLEAN, rubber brayer (roller), as the cement sticks to itself. Easy peasy. Then flip material back from other side onto itself and do the other side. It's a rinse, repeat deal.
