A friend of mine recently purchased chrome rims for his car and he wants to maintain these rims so that they always look as good as new. It's a well known fact that chrome rims can be easily scratched, pitted and discolored if we choose the wrong cleaning product or cleaning tools. Want to know what products do you guys for your chrome rims. Planning to check out our local Walmart store this weekend.

Any recommendations?

Automotive soap. Generally you shouldn't need a chemical spray cleaner for your wheels unless you only wash your car once a year and there is an inch of brake dust built up on them. Also, if you do clean your car regularly, a spray cleaner will strip any wax or polish on them and deteriorate the chrome. If the wheels themselves are made of aluminum, some of those cleaners will corrode and destroy the wheel over time.

So basically, the best thing to do is put multiple coats of polish and wax on the wheels before they ever get used and put a fresh coat of wax on them every wash. This will by far keep brake dust from sticking in the first place and will keep the wheels looking good for a long time. Don't use a brush to clean the wheels either, use a new rag specifically for wheel cleaning.

I like meguiars hot chrome wheels I use it one a week spray it on let soak for a min and rinse it off

For horrible chrome I use Brasso, the soldier's friend. NOT on aluminum. Agree with sealing them. Clean them spotless then a coat of clearcoat then wax will keep them nice.

Nah, I used it all the time on parts that were fresh from the chromer.
There would always be water/chemical spots on the newly rechromed parts when we'd get them back, and I'd wipe them off quick with a clean piece of steel wool.

Just make sure you aren't rubbing in lots of dirt or grime, and that you turn/pull apart the wool frequently while using it to expose fresh/clean wool. Otherwise, yes, you can scratch it if you're not careful.

For just straight cleaning, even with heavy brake dust, the best thing I've found is windshield washer fluid. Soak an old rag in it and go to town. Cheap and effective. For light surface rust, 000 steel wool with some car wash detergent as kustomkyle said. Then rinse well. Definately follow up with a good sealer.

I've always like the cheap turtle wax chrome cleaner.

Once you use this stuff, you'll never use anything else:

I like the one in the tube, a little bit goes a long way

Brasso eats sh*t compared to this ^^ it was banned in the A&M corps cuz we'd finish polishing everything in a few minutes.

Mothers has a nice clear coat wax for a top coat, I never use a top coat on car chrome though
