hello i have a 350 and i need to do the 500 mile valve check/adjust - where can i get the oil plugs so i can run the motor with the valve covers removed and what are they called?
thanks

actually they don't throw that much oil, you don't have to use the retainers.
i think they're called pushrod retainers but i'm not positive.

I did not know they made such a thing, You don't need it, like Megaladen said they dont' throw much oil.

Get a pair of old steel valve covers and cut the tops off keeps the oil from running down the sides of the motor

I agree. The one time I ran an engine without valve covers I made a big mess in a short time. I wound up shutting it down within about 20 seconds! You could also cut an "I" shaped slit in the top of your cheapie valve covers and peel the edges of the covers back to a 90 degree angle to catch any oil splash.

summit racing sells this clips made by proform for $10.99 that stop the oil slinging while you adjust valves.
valve train oil deflectors
here is the part number
PRO-66822

you don't have to do one cylinder at a time...

bring the number 1 piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) on compression stroke.
Adjust intake valve on #2 and #7;exhaust valves #4 and #8.

Rotate crankshaft 180 degrees clockwise and adjust intake valve on #1 and #8; exhaust valves #3 and #6.

Rotate crankshaft 180 degrees again (TDC) and adjust intake valves #3 and #4; exhaust valves #5 and #7.

Rotate crankshaft again 180 degrees and adjust intake valves #5 and #6;
exhaust valves #1 and #2.
