Ok GBF i have a B&M shifter iin my 84 Monte SS and i want to hook up the neutral safety switch for obvious reasons lol and i dropped the steering colum and there is a large black wire that goes into a harness and i dont know what wire to splice into to hook up the neutral safety switch aand the backup light switch. i dont want to hook up both linkages to the transmission. thanks for the help

It is on the column, and has several wires on it, hold on, I'll go look at my ss..or you can look one up on Rock Auto and then you'll know what it looks like...

OK, it is on the top of the column, has a blue and a green wire, those are the back up lights; and there is a black with white stripe wire and an orange with black or brown stripe wire, those are the neutral safety wires.

The switch is white and clicks back and forth for adjustment if you push on it.

Column or floor, the switch is the same as far as I know. It is on top of the column, with your head by the brake pedal (edit: looking up) you can see it clearly. It is about mid way down between the floor and the wheel.

ok I have another question, there's 2 spots for the wires on the neutral safety switch on the shifter, does it matter which wire goes where? like positive or negative?

The column has to be in the P or N position for the key to turn, mechanically, regardless of the switch being there.

I do not know how the switches on your new shifter work, but the two pairs of wires (listed previously) have to be connected to each other to work by the switch.

Basically, when you put the shifter in reverse, the switch needs to close the circuit and connect the blue and green wires to each other so your backup lights will come on.

Concordantly, the shifter's neutral safety switch has to close the circuit between the black and orange wires (when in P or N, or maybe just P, depending on the shifter, for the starter to turn) IIRC. It has been a while since I messed with this stuff.
The part in italics is incorrect.

OK, I was wrong...The blue and green wires ARE for the back up lights, but the black and orange wires are for the computer to know status of the shifter, and have nothing to do with the starter.

The wire you need is the purple (or red) wire on the ignition switch on the column. I will look on mine later today to try and verify the location. The neutral safety function is totally mechanical, as in the key can only be turned when the column (shifter) is in the correct rotation.

Honestly, the very best solution is to leave the column linkage hooked up.

if you could look that would be great because i dissconnected the old linkage when i bought the shifter because i was following their directions but thanks for the info and again if you could tell me where the ignition wire is it would help me alot lol 🙂
