I'm hoping someone can give me an opinion of what is wrong with my car. I have an 87 Monte Carlo SS with a 350 small block in it that is putting out white smoke from both sides of the exhaust. It has true dual exhaust so I'm hoping that its not a head gasket because I would think it would only smoke from one side. I highly doubt both gaskets would be blown. It is losing a little coolant every so often but it is not going into the crankcase. The oil looks clean and when I open the radiator cap the water is clear as well with no bubbles when I open the throttle a little bit. It does not overheat either. The water is obviously going out the exhaust because there are no leaks and I am wondering if it could be the intake manifold gasket or a crack in the manifold itself. It has an Edelbrock aluminum manifold on it and I dont know if they have a history of cracking. I bought one of those block tester kits and it passed so I am hoping to rule out the head gaskets. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

what does the smoke smell like? Coolant has a distinct sweet smell to it if that's what it is. Does it just smoke on start up or after the car is warmed up

I'm not sure of the smell but it might be a coolant smell. It pretty much smokes all of the time a few seconds after startup. I'm taking it to a friends house tomorrow and going to do a compression test on it. I'm hoping That its the intake and that I dont have to take off the heads and replace the gaskets or even worse a cracked head or block.

it doesn't sound like the heads if you have duels and it's smoking evenly from two pipes. You don't happen to have a 350 for a transmission do you? If the modulator diaphragm is broken I have heard of transmission fluid been sucked up into the intake and transmission fluid burns white

No its the 700r transmission. The slowly leaking water is what concerns me about it being a serious issue.

im actually hoping for a good answer here... my 85 MC SS seems like it has the same problem.
it seems like it got worse after i replaced my radiator.. i dont see any difference in the oil or coolant. its been running stronger since i put the radiator in. but every time i gas it. theres a nice cloud of smoke in the rear view.
the top of my catalytic converter has been rusted and leaks exhaust. its so bad i cant drive my dog anywhere in the car with out her getting sick.
i know my engine could use a rebuild, it has about 110k miles on it. but if there is an answer the does not require a rebuild, im all ears(well eyes)... any tips are greatly appreciated.

I did the compression test today and everything checked out. The car has true dual exhaust but also has convertors on it. A friend of mine seems to think that they could be the culprit of the white smoke. I had planned on removing them anyway and putting straight pipes on it in place of them. I got on it a little bit today for the first time and the smoke was much less after that.. Gonna remove the convertors this week and see.

Yea I'm thinking it may be steam and not smoke. A lot of condensation coming out of both tailpipes and hoping its from the converters.
