what’s the widest rear wheel tire combination you can put on a stock 79 Malibu?

From what I have seen and read around here on this site ... with some finess and massage .. little muscle I believe you can run a 9.5 wide rim (17 -18) for example something like 275/40/17 but I here its tight backspace is a whole can of worms some say 5" backspace and some say you can't go more than 4.5 so... My best suggestion is get a tape measure and some friends and start measuring good luck

@ stock height I had a 17x9 with a 315/40/17 on the back, it did stick out of the wheelwell . If you wanted to tuck the tire in the wheel well then a 275/60/15 will fit on a 8.5 or 9" wheel.
