What holds the plastic windshield clips on the car that go across the top? I need to replace some but until I remove the trim I can't see what holds them in. But, I don't want to remove the trim until I know I can replace them without having to replace the glass, too! The one that is broken looks embedded in that goop holding the window in so I can't tell what's going on. The look different than the metal ones on the side.

There is a small welded in stud that the clips slide on to.
Once the trim is removed, you'll be able to see the slot in the clip that it rides on.

To remove the clips, you just push them to the side to free them from the stud.
You may have to cut away at some sealer to free the clips, but it's pretty self-explanitory.

Just cross your fingers that none of the studs break off...

Funny, I am converting a 81 wagon from the rubber rear side window trim to the 78-80 alumninum trim. In other words I have NO STUDS for the clips to slide onto. All I have heard of so far is to place the clip where I need it and drill and pop-rivet it in place. Anyone else have any OTHER ideas? :|

I'm not too keen on adding more holes in an area subject to water sitting in it...

Pop rivets can crack the plastic clips. If I were to drill, I'd rather use screws.

If you want to do it correctly, you'll need something like a Uni-spotter and you can weld the studs in yourself with the windows removed.

I have one, and since you're local, I'd be happy to let you borrow it/come over and lend a hand.
I've got a box of the studs and I know what clips you'll need...

All right Blake. My windows are out already. Bad news, I painted that area already. I assume it needs to be brought back down to steel? If your willing to lend a hand that'd be great! I would much rather do it the right way. I'll send you a PM.
