Geez, the transmission is finally in. Lessons learned that I would do different: Start with a GM V8 style transmission, the input shaft was longer on mine, and it uses the ford style bell housing mount. (which wasn't a big deal for me bc the Olds bell housing had ford top loader holes in it.) Next time I'm using a after market hydraulic throw out bearing instead of the GM part. I had to make too many custom pieces to get the lines to work and the fit is tight!
Believe it or not, the pilot bearing was a royal PITA. No one had it and the wrong one that was given to me had to be machined down to fit. (Side note, most olds blocks are drilled for the pilot bearing. The issue is no store carries the right bearing.) That little thing wound up costing me 40 bucks!! Not including the gas used running around, finding someone that could do it.
